Adult Swim's Leading New Show of 2025 Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
