The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
