Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
