Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist stated in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their progress".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public communications showed that Summers corresponded with the financier until the day before his 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization expressed it understood Summers' choice to depart.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the Board," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to release its documents on the case.
The legislation will then proceed to the desk of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he expects to approve the measure, after reversing his stance on the issue following pressure from his base.
Email Contents
A group of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced multiple prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails revealed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to link the official to notable global figures.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the wider community, he said he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix connections with the individuals most important to me".
Professional History
The professor held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed the university from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington where the professor was a researcher, verified that the economist was not associated with the institution.
The former official entered the leadership of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
