The child of former South African President Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the commencement of her trial in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over comments she posted on digital networks several years back during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her dad.

A week of disorder in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, caused at least 300 deceased and caused damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

The defendant has been charged of fuelling this unrest and faces allegations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and followed the previous president's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an probe into allegations of graft while he was serving as president.

The defendant has always rejected the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously calling the prosecution's evidence as weak.

She has also consistently said the charges against her were an effort to resolve political grievances with her dad after he started his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Case Arguments

This was echoed by the foundation, which said the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and familial harassment" against the former president and his relatives.

A handful of supporters from her political organization, the political party, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has stated that the proof presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks substantial evidence for a guilty verdict.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Digital comments from the past form the core of the government's case
  • Deadly unrest in 2021 resulted in major fatalities and monetary losses
  • The individual on trial faces multiple counts of provocation to unrest
  • Judicial trials are expected to carry on for numerous court sessions

The trial continues as all parties present their arguments before the judge in what is anticipated to be a highly monitored court case with major politically charged implications for South Africa.
