Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars
He battled the legal system and the law prevailed.
Sixty days after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems jail-bound.
Expected Jailing
The convicted coup-monger – who's been subject to house arrest in his residence while a number of judicial steps and challenges play out – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the next few days, amid growing speculation that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.
Historical Remarks on Convicts
Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the right-wing former military man displayed scant compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“Why should we provide these dirtbags a easy time?” he once mused. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”
At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to end up there, you simply need is not rape, abduction or rob.”
Jail Destination Discussion
However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an apparent attempt to dissuade the supreme court from transferring him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, stated he predicted the septuagenarian politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal ailments – the result of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 political campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells containing forty inmates: “It's virtually one square meter per detainee.
“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Backers Speak Out
The senator isn't the sole person voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's anticipated imprisonment.
Penning in a leading publication, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the biggest unfairness in its record”.
“It represents an injustice that gnaws the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed General Response
This could be accurate given the substantial support Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. But his predicted jailing has also pleased the hearts of many other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to stop his successor from taking power – and even scheming to have him killed.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current president's Workers’ party, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive dignified treatment – but respectful care in prison. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have long praising the tough treatment of prisoners, had suddenly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly claimed that basic rights should not be for criminals – chosen to inspect a jail to learn what conditions are really like,” he stated.
“The former president is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, degrading treatment”.
Likely Prison Facilities
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected assigned facility appears to be a close penitentiary for officers and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
The accommodations are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the spectacular official residence, approximately 20 kilometers away.
Based on information, the room Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the size of vehicle spaces – and includes a 130 square foot bathroom with a water facility and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a set and additionally a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information indicated.
Ideological Reactions
He condemned the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
