Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Leaves His Ego Outside.
A single omission was enough. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that securing World Cup glory will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to adapt to the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.
The manager wants the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of using it in the right way. Individual quality matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when stardom takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after showing that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham displays that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. We all need to help him and create an environment which he can channel that intensity in matches and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of coaching. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus the German side recently.
The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to include another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be too many? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who must play central. The coach wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for a long time. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to representing his club in a particular setup, to have a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned one star bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Interest is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to develop the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting the captain to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be watching him closely. Leave the ego outside. It will make a powerful squad into an more effective one.
